Looking back on the Nations Cup 2011: Herzog and Shafar winn Warandecross
Traditionally the International loket.nl Warandecross Tilburg is held in the last weekend of November. With more than 4700 subscriptions another record was broken in Tilburg. This year’s gala races were won by the Dutch Adriënne Herozg and Vitaly Shafar from the Ukraine.
The Warandecross is a two-day event. On Saturday the National Youth day is being held and on Sunday the international races are the highlight of the day. Besides the stage for the Brabant Nations Cup, this year’s races also hosted the Dutch national cross-country championships and it was the last chance for Dutch athletes to qualify for the European Championships.
The women’s race was led from the beginning by the Dutch Adriënne Herzog and Simret Restle fromGermany. The two women kept together, until Herzog took off in the final part, winning both the Warandecross and taking home the Dutch title. Sabrina Mockenhaupt (G) came in third and Salome Rocha (P) was the first athlete under 23 to come in. They were followed by Eleni Gebrehiwot (G), Susanne Hahn (G), and Alexandra Jawor (P). The top ten was completed with the three Dutch girls that fought for the remaining silver and bronze medal in the national title race. Although Andrea Deelstra lay in second position during the entire race, in the final phase she was overtaken by both Ruth van der Meijden and Marije te Raa.
The Ukrainian Vitaly Sharaf made the men’s race: Taking the lead from the beginning and keeping it till the end. Behind him Kahlid Choukoud was able to defend his Dutch Cross-Country title, harvesting his fifth Dutch title in 2011. Jesper van der Wielen (U23) came in third, making him runner up for the Dutch title. Last years winner Steffen Uliczka (G) came in fourth, in the same time as Abdi Nageeye (NL, U23) who completed the stage for the Dutch championships. Mark Kenneally (IRE), Guus Janssen (NL), Thomas Poesiat (NL), Sven Weyer (G) and Vitalij Gheorghita (M) completed the top ten.
